Unhooked

So today at Suncrest we hit the middle week in our “Hooked” series (2 of 3). It’s been a great series about “overcoming hurts, habits, and hang-ups,” using the account of the Exodus to parallel our own journey to freedom. Patti and I had a chance to participate this morning as we shared about the addiction to online pornography I wrestled with for a number of years. I think it was meaningful to many, and I appreciate everyone who have shared about their own sexual addictions with me since we gave our testimony. It meant a lot to be able to revisit this part of our lives with our new church family. Perhaps there’s a few teens losing their computers from their rooms today, or wives asking husbands if they’re looking at things they shouldn’t– which is why we were so happy to share our own experience.

It wasn’t necessarily easy talking about it, of course, nor was it fun bringing back emotions and hurts we haven’t had to think about for awhile. Nonetheless, anytime we can get this topic out in front of people is a good thing! Our Lead Pastor Greg was teaching this morning (and thus interviewing us), and he did an excellent job of drawing out the practical application of our story. Obviously, as he pointed out, I have an awesome wife, and I’m so honored that she would get up with me on stage and share her feelings in front of many hundreds of people. I’m blessed!

Anyway, to listen to the interview, check out Suncrest’s message archive and check out the message for 01.06.08. (As of typing this, it is not yet posted, but will be soon).

During the interview I mentioned the benefit of filtering the internet in your home. We have had great success with Safe Eyes, and highly recommend it. It is easy and effective, and fits the internet-heavy lifestyle Patti and I live.

Thanks for sharing your story! It is so good to hear how the Lord is working to set people free from harmful addictions. I can identify with your story. I, myself, am a former addict.

If you are interested in software that helps with accountability, try out Covenant Eyes. I work for them and I’ve read so many testimonies about how the software has helped people drag their sins into the light to destroy their power. Try it free for one month to see how it works.
